In celebration of the new film opening nationally on the 27th June "THE EDGE OF LOVE" is a tale of the life and times of Dylan Thomas's - A famous Carmarthenshire poet - The Farm & Country Holiday Group would like to give you a little insight into the film and tell where it has been filmed and why:

Dylan Thomas was famous for his lifestyle as well as his wonderful poems and prose, reputed to be one of the most significant writers of the 20th century. Born in Swansea in 1914 his drinking induced his early death in 1953 in New York's Chelsea Hotel. The film takes its inspiration from Dylan's turbulent relationships with two women, his wife Caitlin, played by Sienna Miller and his childhood sweetheart Vera Phillips played by Kiera Knightley in this touching film. The film is set during World War two, Dylan's wild, moody and rugged nature compare with the fantastic scenery of Wales.

Most of his life he spent travelling relentlessly proving his free spirit but where ever he was he always called Wales home and spent a great deal of his time in Carmarthenshire settling down to write many favourites in Laugharne, he was first drawn to this tiny village, hugging the quiet estuary of the Taf River, where he lived in The Boat House with his wife Caitlin, just up the lane is the small old wooden shed which used to be a garage housing an old Wolseley, now restored to the cosy writing room Dylan wrote his most famous piece: Under Milk Wood, believed to be based on the village and people he lived with. He often described the place by telling his attentive audience: I came one day and never left, he got off the bus and forgot to get on again! Dylan was never a wealthy man but loved the village and people he lived with, many have a tale to tell even today. You can find his and Caitlin's grave, marked with a white cross in the 13th-centuary St Martins church. You will not find any monuments or the like to his name but what you will find plenty of places he had socialised in and a few locals who can tell a tale or two about those times in their beloved village.

The filming of his life has been made in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire where the estuary looks over to Sir John's Hill and further along the horizon to the Gower Peninsula and Worms Head. Along with further filming at New Quay, Cardigan Bay where the scenery is wonderful and the sea tempestuous in the winter months. Making the north and south of our county the ideal place to explore from.

All our group members have a special welcome for all of those who wish to explore Dylan Thomas's life.
